How do you make a home? How do you pick your life up, move across the country, and start over? Kevin and I faced the challenge almost 4 years ago (wow!), and it is interesting what you learn about your self and your partner during this time.
1. Stepping outside my comfort zone is a lot harder than I would have thought. When we first moved, I didn't have a job right away and would spend days where my only human interaction - besides Kevin - would be the cashier at the grocery store. It was hard to meet people, especially with no way to really interact with people.
2. Many conflicting emotions at once is totally normal. When we first moved, I was angry and frustrated, sad and anxious, as well as enchanted and completely excited, all at the same time. There was a brand new world of experiences and people that was unique to this area, and I was missing it. Kevin was a saint for putting up with my mood swings.
3. When you finally do meet someone new, it is hard not to glob on to them. I seriously tried harder to meet new friends than I did when I was dating. There is the awkward do they like me? Do they think I am clingy? How do you say please hang out with me because you are my only human interaction, with out sounding desperate.
4. Finding a niche of great people is the best feeling in the world. When you do finally find a group of people that you love, the world becomes right again. Whether you find them through a meetup.com group (seriously, it is the best thing ever), work or joining a rec sports league, when you do finally find that special group it is amazing. You begin to feel excited about your new home and your new life.
5. Life is an adventure, and totally what you make of it. The biggest thing that I learned is that the best way to feel fulfilled in life is to put more into it than your hoping to get out. You get the best results when you push yourself to be uncomfortable. The world is a huge place, full of so many unique experiences. However when you boil it down, people are people, and most of them are facing the same fears and insecurities as you,
So don't be afraid to take the plunge, make the big move, and live your life the way that will make you the happiest.
